Hospital and Recreational/Social Complex, Housesteads Roman Fort, Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland, 13.5.18.
Looking after soldiers’ health and wellbeing became a priority in maintaining efficiency at Hadrian’s Wall and all soldiers were trained in basic first aid. Many trained as Doctors and medics too. The hospital featured a central courtyard and a series of small surrounding rooms. Below this area was a complex featuring a bathhouse and heated rooms. These buildings are constructed on a steep hill and the drainage system to accompany these structures is of a highly sophisticated design.
