Ravenglass Roman Bathhouse, Ravenglass, Lake District
Ravenglass Roman bath house is somewhat a curiosity since there is so little obvious evidence of Roman occupation in the vicinity and yet excavation has revealed a sizeable Roman fort constructed nearby. The bath house is all that is visible today. The Lake District was a difficult area for the Romans to police and manage since the mountainous terrain provided the perfect landscape for rebellions and uprisings. The bath house would have been a place of respite and luxury in an unforgiving environment. As you can see from the images, it gets rather wet in the Lake District.
