Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia/Germany on his 10th birthday (1869). Wilhelm was born with a “withered arm,” which was shorter and less able than his right arm. His arm may have been damaged by forceps during childbirth as the doctors delivering him could not violate protocol and remove his mother’s skirts to see what they were doing. Wilhelm was subjected to an array of unusual and ineffective treatments, ranging from electric shock to body-stretching machinery to thrusting the arm into the freshly killed carcasses of animals.
