Sewu Temple is a Mahayana Buddhist temple built in the 8th century in Indonesia. More accurately called “Candi Sewu” (‘candi’ being the Indonesian word for Hindu and/or Buddhist temple), it is the second largest of such temples in the country.Abandoned for centuries, it was found buried deep beneath the volcanic debris spewed by Mount Merapi. Interestingly, while the local Javanese were still aware of the temple’s presence, its origins were lost to them and remained a mystery. As such, it was common for locals to tell tall tales or speak of myths and legends surrounding the temple to such a point that it was believed to have supernatural origins. In one story, the temple was built by legions of demons. In any case, because of their fearful provenance of the temple, locals dared not touch it or remove its stones.Source link
